For the past 4 years, podcasting has afforded me an opportunity to share my story and build community. From 2017-2018 I was one of the hosts and producers of Welcome to Queersburg, making sense of my queer identity in small town Appalachia. Though it only ran for two seasons (Instagram here and old episodes here!) it was the first podcast I developed and co-hosted. I gained skills in story producing and audio editing but, more importantly, I was able to build community with my co-host and with others as they figured out what it means to be queer in small town America.
The skills gained while working on Welcome to Queersburg, I utilized in producing and co-hosting my recent podcast show, Courting in Color. In summer 2019, my co-host Chatrice and I recorded two episodes, pilot episodes if you will. Life changed for the both of us and one year later, on June 9, 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic whirling around us, we officially launched Courting in Color. At the heart of this podcast show is two friends sharing their dating and relationship experiences as people of color. For the show, I edit our episodes and sound design the show’s music. The intro and outro track were designed by yours truly! You can hear our episodes, read more about us, or contact either or both of us.
